Chefs are competitive. They have cook-offs and throw-downs and showdowns — and sometimes their bets boil over beyond the kitchen. For example, Hilton Head chefs Clayton Rollison and Lee Lucier wagered on this year’s Super Bowl. The chef whose team won got to unabashedly flaunt it by hosting a dinner with his cuisine at the losing chef’s restaurant. The winning chef also got to select the charity to benefit from the dinner’s proceeds. So with the game over and chef Rollison’s team defeated, he will open the doors at Lucky Rooster Kitchen + Bar to chef Lucier of FISH Seafood and Raw Bar for a dinner to benefit Volunteers in Medicine. The menu that evening has dishes like Not New England Clam Chowdah and Braised G.O.A.T. that oh-so-subtly remind who won and lost the game. Reservations for the dinner Thursday, March 1, are available beginning at 6 p.m. and can be made by calling 843-681-3474.
Chef Clayton Rollison will team with chef BJ Dennis for a Gullah/Geechee pop-up dinner series Oct. 17 through 21 at Lucky Rooster, 841 William Hilton Pkwy. A special a la carte menu paying homage to this cuisine with West African heritage will be available Wednesday, Oct. 18 through Saturday, Oct. 22. Guests may select from chef Dennis’s Gullah/Geechee specialties including appetizers, entrees, desserts and specialty cocktails.
Kick-off Gullah/Geechee Pop-up Dinner Week Tuesday, Oct. 17 with a dinner honoring the heritage and flavors of this historic cuisine. Charleston’s Parcel 32 chef Digby Stridiron will join Dennis and Rollison in collaboration of this special menu. The evening will begin at 6:30 p.m. with appetizers followed by a five-course dinner with paired wines or mocktails. The dinner will benefit Greener Grass, a non-profit that helps willing addicts and alcoholics get long-term treatment. The cost is $180 per person and is inclusive of tax and gratuity.
